Spank of China
A video of 8 employees in China being beaten with a stick and then having their heads shaven by a motivational trainer, after their apparent lack of exertion during a training day, has gone viral.
Changzhi Zhangze Rural Commercial Bank hired the Shanghai based training company to organise a training session for 200 of its employees. The 8 employees were singled out at the end to explain why they had the lowest scores and then publicly humiliated as an example. The incident which was filmed on a mobile phone and then circulated, prompting heavy criticism. The bank’s chairman and a deputy governor have since been suspended, and the trainer has offered an apology.
While creativity in motivating employees is to be encouraged, this is certainly not an example we would suggest to other employers.
